Jamboree on the Air / Internet

The Jamboree on the Air and the Internet is taking place at the Peter Kneale Press Centre at the TT Grandstand on the 15. – 16. October 2011, starting at 09:00 on the Saturday and finishing at 16:00 on the Sunday. If you would like to communicate with Scouts from around the world by either radio or computer, please turn up at any time and stay for as long as you wish. 50th Birthday Camp

2nd Onchan held its 50th Birthday Camp at the Crossags Camp Site in Ramsey, over the weekend of the 23. – 25. September 2011. During the weekend we had twenty two Beaver Scouts, thirty five Cub Scouts, thirty three Scouts, six Explorer Scouts and eighteen Leaders on site.

Leaders and Explorers started things early by taking equipment out and setting up the Patrol Tents on Thursday evening. Most Leaders were also out on Site early Friday evening waiting for the Cubs and Scouts to arrive at 19:30. Some Scouts had brought their own tents and in challenging windy conditions set these up. The Cubs were being accommodated in the giant Ark building at the top of the camp site. It was getting dark quite early and Flag break was held in near darkness with just t he flag area being illuminated by lanterns. During Flag Break everyone was presented with a special yellow and gold 50th Birthday Woggle to wear and as a keepsake. The Cubs and Scouts then headed off on a short night hike to Albert Tower and back. By the time they were back on site soup was ready and the camp fire was lit. Everyone was in bed for about 23:30 and the site was quiet around midnight. The high winds were still with us and it got worse through the night with the rain starting at about 02:00.

By early morning the wind had dropped but the rain stayed with us for another hour. Breakfast was served in the Ark and Inspection followed. After Flag Break where the day’s instructions were given out, the Cubs and Scouts were set twenty challenges to complete, these included climbing to the top of the mobile climbing tower, making a cup of tea on a Trangia Stove, changing a wheel on the trailer, launching a paper rocket and racing a homemade chariot around the field. The sun was now fully out and the warm weather was with us for the rest of the day. After lunch the Cubs headed off to Mooargh Park where they met up with the Beaver Scouts who had travelled up on the tram from Douglas. They spent the afternoon enjoying the parks attractions, playing crazy golf and on the boats on the lake. The Scouts split into their Troops and had an afternoon hike, with the Moddey Dhoo Troop hiking to Maughold Church and the Phoenix Troop hiking from the Mountain Hut down the Millennium Way back to camp. Everyone was back on site for a barbecue tea around 17:30, which went down very well, especially the specially created black and yellow birthday cake, which we all got a slice of. In the evening some of the Scouts went swimming in the sea, while the Beavers and Cubs had a Scavenger Hunt and games back on the site. We had supper round the camp fire followed by a few wide games before everyone headed off to bed.

On Sunday it was another early start, the weather was still dry but rain was forecast for later in the day. After breakfast, which had the bonus of bacon sandwiches, inspection and Flag Break, the whole camp walked into Ramsey where the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts were split into two groups, the first went ten pin bowling and the second did a Treasure Hunt around Ramsey Town. After an hour the groups switched over. In the meantime the Explorer Scouts were kept busy taking down tents and packing the Group’s Trailer for the homeward journey. Everyone was back on site for 12:30, where they were served lunch outdoors. After lunch it was a case of packing up and making sure we left the site clean and tidy. We finished the camp off with a formal Flag Down and prize giving before everyone headed off home just as it started to rain.

A big thank you to all the Leaders who made the camp possible and to our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers who made our 50th Birthday Camp so memorable.

We have received the following information about an Orienteering Fundraiser:

You are invited to a Barbecue and Orienteering Competition to raise funds for four Scouts to visit Nepal in October / November to undertake charity work for underprivileged children at an Orphanage in Pokhara.

When: Saturday 8th October 2011
Time: 11.00 until 15.30 hours.
Where: South Barrule Plantation.
Meet: At the car park. On the Shoulder Road, off the A3 above Foxdale, 300 yards on the left hand side. Grid Ref: SC 275 766.
Briefing: At the car park for the Orienteering at 11.10 hours.
Start: Staggered start from the car park at 11.30 hours.
Finish: Watertrough Park Cottage. Maps and course sheets will be provided.

As well as an activity for each Section there will be hot dogs and soup plus a closing fireworks display. Details will be going out in October.

Getting Involved with your Child’s Scouting

To help the Group run smoothly, we have a Group Executive Committee. The Committee is made up of Leaders and parents and helps to fund raise and look after the Group’s Headquarters. We are always on the lookout for parents who would be interested in joining the Committee. About nine meetings are held a year and they only last about an hour. A Box Arrives

We took delivery today of a large box full of footballs, tennis balls, plastic bats, a first aid kit and even a loudhailer, all ‘purchased’ with our Tesco Vouchers a few months ago. Awards Night

Our annual Awards Night is taking place at the Scout Hall on Friday 21. October 2011. It will be a star studded occasion and as usual it will be run along the lines of the ‘Oscars’ with Leaders coming up with four nominations for each Award.

Scouts Summer Camp

Eighteen 2nd Onchan Scouts, two Onchan Explorer Scouts and five Leaders over the 30. July to the 6. August 2011, spent a week camping at Peel for our Summer Camp.

The Scouts arrived on site on the Saturday afternoon and spent the next hour setting up their Patrol Tents and getting the site ready for the week. As it was a fine and sunny afternoon, once all the jobs had been completed the Scouts spent the next couple of hours on the beach in Peel. In the evening after tea, we held a formal Flag Break in full uniform, before heading off for a hike to the top of Peel Hill. Back on site we had our supper round the camp fire before heading off to bed.

On Sunday morning the weather was a bit damp, but that didn’t get us down. After breakfast we held Tent Inspection, where the Patrols were marked on the state of their tent, personal kit and lack of litter. The Scouts donned their uniforms for a visit to the House of Manannan. Lunch was back on site and in the afternoon we spent the afternoon at the Wildlife Park near Ballaugh. After tea we headed off to Watertrough Cottage for an evening of Bivouac building, but it was raining up in the hills and we only stayed an hour. Supper tonight was in the marquee.

On Monday after breakfast and tent inspection, we spent the day at the Venture Centre in Maughold, where the Scouts took part in Abseiling, Crate Building, Shooting, Assault Course, Archery and the Zip Wire. There were a lot of other Scouts at the centre and it was very busy with Scouts taking part in activities on the whole site. Back in Peel, after tea we played some games outside, before we watched a movie in the marquee.

Tuesday morning was spent at Ardwhallan Outdoor Pursuits Centre, where we took part in their problem solving activities and then we finished with a race around the Assault Course. The weather was a bit damp, but by early afternoon the sun was out. After lunch we went out on the Manx Sea Quest RIB and spotted Basking Sharks just north of Peel. The Scouts each got a go at steering the boat. In the evening we went back up to Watertrough Cottage and finished the bivouacs.

On Wednesday, we travelled to Douglas and caught the Tram to Laxey and then to the summit of Snaefell. The Scouts found some of the hidden Letterboxes and hiked to the Mountain Box where they were collected by the minibus. A quick change back at Peel and we were off to the cinema in Douglas to watch Cars 2 (the Scouts did, but some of the Leaders fell asleep). After the cinema we went to KFC for tea, before heading back to site.

On Thursday, the Scouts went swimming in the pool next to the Camp Site and afterwards spent a couple of hours doing Backwoods Cooking. In the afternoon the Scouts went Coasteering with Adventurous Experiences and spent a couple of hours climbing over rocks, swimming into caves and jumping into the sea. After tea and a long game of Danish Longball we watched another movie in the marquee.

Friday saw us up at Mooragh Park for the with the Scouts doing Raft Building in the morning and in the afternoon sailing and kayaking. Luckily it was a fine and sunny day and most of the Scouts didn’t mind getting wet. In the evening we held a Camp Scout Meeting and were joined by other 2nd Onchan Scouts and Leaders for the evening. We finished off our last night with a camp fire and discussion about the camp.

On Saturday, the last day at Camp, we were up early as rain was forecast later on in the morning and we (just) managed to get the tents down before the rain started. With everything packed away, we held Flag Down and presented prizes to the Best Patrol and to some individual Scouts as well. Scouts were collected a bit earlier than originally planned due to the rain.

British Boy Scouts Visit

On Friday 29. July 2011, the Phoenix Scout Troop played host to the 2nd Goring and Streatley Scout Group which is a member of the British Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts Association. The Group were over on a cycling camp and stayed in our Scout Headquarters on their last night before heading back home.

Snaefell Cubs at Ardwhallan

On Friday 15. July 2011, Snaefell Cub Pack met to hold a camp at Ardwhallan Outdoor Education Centre. The Cubs arrived at 19:30 on Friday night and were briefed about the weekend and allocated rooms and work groups. After this the Cubs got changed for our evening activities. We completed a short hike to St Luke’s before locating the Old Tynwald Site Letterbox. After this we had a treasure hunt around the church where lots of letters were hidden which we found and then unscrambled them to find a name. Back at the house we had hot chocolate and biscuits in the Viking Longhouse with Alex’s magic with the fire and some ghost stories and jokes. The Cubs then headed off to bed and fell asleep reasonably quickly; something the Leaders were glad of.

On the Saturday the Cubs were up early for breakfast before room inspection and then our morning activities. In their work groups the Cubs rotated around three bases; the low ropes course and cheese crane, archery and fire lighting and marshmallow toasting. After lunch we split into two groups and did some orienteering for our Map Reader’s Badge and some backwards cooking before swapping around. After this we had a juice and biscuit break and then got changed for the assault course. All the Cubs raced around the assault course to try and get the fastest time. The fastest Cub then raced Alex around the assault course and ultra competitive Alex lost. This meant the Cubs were allowed to pour a big bucket of water over his head. The Cubs then had some free time to get changed and shower before dinner. After dinner while Andrew and Amanda set up for our film the Cubs went and did some problem solving challenge bases whilst getting bitten by lots of midges. Once the film was set up we hurried back in doors got changed and settled down for our film. Half way through, the Cubs were very lucky to have some delicious homemade chocolate cake that Amanda kindly made which went down a treat. As most were very tired and starting to fall asleep, even some leaders, we had a quick hot chocolate before going to bed. The Cubs were asleep very fast and had to actually be woken up the next day.

On Sunday, the rain set in, and after scrumptious bacon and egg baps we had inspection and then headed out in the rain for the wet assault course. Cubs were challenged to take a cup of water around the course trying not to spill any water, few returned with any water left. Alex did not join in this time except to soak Andrew when he got stuck in netting at the end with his own water gun. The Cubs then went and dried off and got changed into their uniforms and packed their bags before lunch. Once cleaned up the Cubs moved their bags out of their rooms and sat down for a camp debrief, thoughts on the camp and prizes. At 14:00 the Cubs were picked up having totally enjoyed their weekend.

Over the weekend Alex was assessed for his Night’s Away Permit and a big thank you must go to the Leaders Andrew, Amanda and Chris for their help and support over the weekend and to Anne for visiting to assess the camp; a big thanks must also go to the Cubs themselves who were very well behaved over the weekend. Well Done. Snaefell Leaders are now starting to think about our next camp.

Manannan Pack – Silver Challenge Camp

Over the weekend 22. – 24. July 2011, we took six Cubs on a special goodbye camp to end their time in Cub Scouts before they all move up to Scouts. The idea of the camp was to work towards the Silver Challenge Badge which is the highest badge they can earn while in Cubs. We all met on Friday at the Scout Hall, the Cubs were not aware what we were doing or where we would be staying during the weekend. After a quick briefing we told the Cubs they must use the route card provided and walk to where we would be staying that night, the Cubs were dropped off at the bottom of South Barrule car park with Rob and Akela, the Cubs navigated there way up the hill and back down again. It was when we were in the plantation the Cubs twigged onto the fact we were staying at Watertrough Cottage. Once we arrived at Watertrough, the fire was well underway and we roasted marshmallows over an open fire, it was getting late so all the Cubs went to bed and were soon asleep.

The next morning everyone was up at 7am, and a quick bite to eat for breakfast and then getting eaten alive by the midges we tidied up Watertrough and headed back to the Scout Hall for a game of basketball. It was time for kayaking at Ballakermeen High School where we had games of kayak polo, water polo and swimming races, it was very nice to get clean and have warm showers. Everyone was getting hungry so we stopped off at Nobles Park for lunch, where we had lunch and played in the park. We then set off to Silverdale Park, where we played Danish Long Ball and had a Ice Cream. It was time for dinner so we went to Port Jack Chippy and had dinner which went down very well with all the Cubs, we then told them where we would be staying that evening, they were all very intrigued when we told them we were going to Druidale. We arrived to Druidale and set up Camp, the Cubs found a couple of rope swings and had a fantastic time on the swings, we had a camp fire, and all huddled around the fire, talking about their time in Cubs and what they have enjoyed and didn’t enjoy. It was getting dark so all the Cubs headed to their tent and were soon fast asleep.

The following morning we had a lie in and were up about 7.30am, soon after Akela was up most of the other Cubs were awake as well. We cooked breakfast over an open fire and the bacon and sausage baps were great. All the Cubs loved their breakfast and commented that we should do this more often, we cleared up the site and then headed back into Onchan where we had some races using the Go Karts, we played on these for about an hour racing around the car park. It was getting near lunchtime, so hot dogs and pizza was eaten for lunch which went down well with the Cubs, it was then time for a team talk because it was time for the all Island Cub Football. We travelled to Laxey where we met with the other Cub Packs including our other fellow Cubs in the Snaefell Pack. We did very well by winning every game in the group stages, then thrashing the Malew Cubs in the Semi Finals, then in the final we were again Douglas Cushag where we beat them 5-0. A big well done to the Manannan Cub team for winning the trophy for Onchan which will go on display in our trophy cabinet at the Scout Hall. After the football competition we met the Sunday Beavers in Laxey and joined in with the BBQ and games, to finish the weekend Akela treated the Cubs to an Ice Cream for doing so well over the weekend. All the Cubs were picked up by their parents at the Scout Hall in Onchan.

Cubs Football Competition

Both of 2nd Onchan’s Cub Packs entered a team in the annual Cub Football competition this year being held in Laxey.

The Snaefell Pack team won a couple of their games but didn't get through to
the semi finals.

The Manannan Pack team won every game they played, with their highest win 7-1. They made it through to the final beating the 1st Malew Cubs, then in the final against 1st Douglas Cushag, beating them 5-0. They received a trophy for the competition and also a football. Well done to all those who took part.

Jamboree Scouts Head Off

Three Onchan Explorer Scouts, Nick, Ryan & Owen, joined six other Manx Scouts today at Ronaldsway Airport, to head off to the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden. They will be meeting up with the rest of their Unit at Manchester, before traveling over to Denmark, where they will be staying for a few days with the rest of the UK Contingent of 4,000 Scouts, before joining around thirty thousand Scouts for just under two weeks at the Jamboree Site in southern Sweden. After the Jamboree the Unit will be off to Switzerland for a few days of home hospitality. We are sure they will all have a fantastic time. The three Onchan members (all ex 2nd Onchan) are a credit to Scouting.

Thursday Beavers in Knots

2nd Onchan’s Thursday Beavers finished their Scouting year with a visit from their Group Scout Leader – Ash, on the 14. July 2011. The Beavers were trying to complete their Outdoor Challenge Badge and their SILVER Challenge, so set about learning and using two knots – the reef knot and the figure of eight – under the careful instruction of Ash. The Beavers were very attentive and diligent and did a fantastic job at learning this new skill. Some even managed to tie the knot behind their back!

This visit meant we could complete our sixth and final SILVER challenge -the letter L for learning. Well Done Beavers!

Manannan Cubs Summer Party

On Monday 18. july 2011, it was our last Cub meeting for the term, we were supposed to go to Laxey but the weather wasn't too good. Instead we played games & had a BBQ. We said goodbye to seven Cubs who are leaving us, and also Matthew Andrade (ACSL) who is off to University. Good luck to all those moving to Scouts.

Group Social

As part of our 50th Birthday Celebrations the Group held a Social gathering for old and present Leaders and Committee Members and invited guests at the Scout Hall on Sunday 17. July 2011. Around seventy guests attended including the Isle of Man’s Lieutenant Governor Adam Wood. Our guests were welcomed with either a glass of wine or a fruit cocktail, before the Group Scout Leader Julian Ashcroft, made a short speech, detailing some of the Groups achievements over the past fifty years and thanking past Leaders for their involvement and present Leaders for their on going commitment. This speech as followed by a speech by the new Scout Association – Isle of Man President Peter Kelly, who gave some more details of the Groups history.

After the speeches the guests enjoyed a hot and cold buffet put on by our Executive Committee.

Our next 50th Birthday event is our group Camp over the 23. – 25. September 2011.

Island Scout Camp

Twenty three Scouts (and a few Leaders) from 2nd Onchan’s Moddey Dhoo and Phoenix Scout Troops attended the Island Scout Camp at Peel over the 8. – 10. July 2010, making up around a third of the campers on site.

After putting up our Patrol Tents we hiked to Peel Hill where the Camp Opening Ceremony took place against the setting sun. It was quite late by the time we got back to camp so after supper it was time for bed.

Saturday consisted of ticketed activities which included: Climbing, Kayaking, Axe & Saw, Fire Lighting, Swimming, Mountain Biking, Sea Kayaking, Backwoods Cooking and Pioneering. After tea a Treasure Hunt around Peel kept everyone busy and in the evening we were joined on site by two groups of Irish Scouts who led the camp fire entertainment. The evening was finished off with a movie in the marquee.

On Sunday the Scouts had to complete a series of challenges before we took down the tents just before lunch. Then it was a case of packing up the camp before heading off home. Luckily for us (but not other parts of the Island) we enjoyed fine weather for almost all the weekend. All in all a great camp.

Beavers Three Legs Challenge

2nd Onchan’s Thursday Beavers have just completed the 3rd and final leg of the Three Legs Challenge. Eight Beavers turned up for the walk from Crosby to Braddan. The rain held off for most of the walk but unfortunately we got caught in a heavy shower as we approached Braddan. Luckily most of us were prepared with rain jackets! The Beavers completed the walk in about an hour and a half – a great effort. Five Beavers have now completed all three legs of the challenge – so very well done to Robert, Luke, Joshua M, Thomas and James.

Beavers TT Talk

2nd Onchan’s Thursday Beavers recently had a visit from their very own TT Rider – Richard ‘Milky’ Quayle! Milky Quayle, a Beaver parent, talked to the Colony about his experiences of racing in the TT. He showed them some of the equipment used for racing – helmets, gloves, leathers & boots – both old and new - and the Beavers were allowed to try some of these items on for size! Everyone was very excited about the racing bike. Milky Quayle explained some of the important features of the bike and showed the Beavers how to keep a low riding position when racing. The highlight was probably the famous TT Trophy which Milky Quayle won in the Lightweight 400cc race in 2002. The talk finished with a few noisy revs as Milky Quayle started up his motorbike! This visit also meant we could complete our fifth SILVER challenge -the letter R for racing!

Beaver Sports Day

2nd Onchan’s Thursday Beavers took part in the Beaver Sports Day - held last month at the Island Cub Camp in St John’s. With a strong team of twelve Beavers, two weeks of training, perfect weather conditions and the expert guidance of past champion Leaders - Steve and Lee, 2nd Onchan’s Thursday Beavers came in a fantastic FIRST! There were a few technical problems regarding skipping ropes and space hoppers, but the Beavers were able to overcome these difficulties and take the trophy. Very well done to Torin, Aaron, Bradley, Scott, Joshua J, Adam, Alexander, Thomas, Joshua M, Rhys, Haydn and Ben – a great result!

Cub Three Legs Challenge

On Sunday 3. July 2011, 2nd Onchan Manannan Cubs and 2nd Onchan Snaefell Cubs took part in the final Three Legs Challenge for Cub Scouts. The weather conditions were great, this hike was from St Luke’s Church along the Millennium Way to Crosby, then along the Heritage Way to St Johns. All Cubs, Parents and Leaders had a fine hike with all the Cubs having a really good time, we stopped for lunch at the Park in Crosby before finishing shortly after 2pm in St Johns. Well done for all those who took part in the hike.

Beavers on the Beach

2nd Onchan Thursday Beavers took up the challenge from Santon Beavers - and along with other Beaver Colonies on the Island - met at Douglas Beach to try and build the best Marble Run. Conditions were perfect and all the Beavers had a great time. Prizes were awarded for the best decorated and the best designed Marble Run. Whilst 2nd Onchan Thursday Beavers didn’t win they built some fantastic sand castles. Many thanks to Santon Beavers for organising the event and bringing the juice and biscuits.

Island Cub Camp

Over the weekend 24. – 26. June, Cubs from 2nd Onchan’s Manannan and Snaefell Cub Packs took part in Island Camp in St Johns. All Cubs met on site on the Friday Night, the weather was dull and raining, so sports were held in the marque and inside the clubhouse. On the Saturday Cubs were split into groups and went round several bases including climbing, crate climbing treasure hunts, kite making and letter box trails. On Sunday all the Cubs took part in a treasure hunt and also some man hunt games. A big thank you to all the Onchan Cubs who took part and the Leaders who helped run the camp, also a big thank you to the Onchan Explorers who helped set up the tents on Thursday and helped over the weekend, your support is very much appreciated by the Onchan Leaders.

50th Birthday Group Camp

The Group will be holding a special Group Camp as part of our 50th Birthday Celebrations over the 23. – 25. September 2011. The camp will be held at the Crossags Camp Site, Ramsey and is open to all 2nd Onchan Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, together with the Onchan District Explorer Scouts. Letters are now available to download for the Cub and Scout Sections. Letters for the Beaver Section will be available very soon.

Yomp

Scouts Eliot S. and Oliver M. completed the first section of Yomp on Sunday 26. June 2011.

The second section of Yomp is taking place on Sunday 3. July 2011. We will be meeting at Sulby School for 10:00. Finish will be at Crosby Football Ground for around 15:30. All 2nd Onchan Scouts and Onchan District Explorer Scouts are invited to attend. Normal hiking kit and a packed lunch should be bought by everyone.

Destination: Port Soderick

On Friday the 24. June 2011, the Moddey Dhoo Troop and the Phoenix Troop will be joining together for a joint activity.

For those with bikes we will be doing a Cycle Hike from the Summerland end of the Promenade along the prom cycle way up onto Marine Drive and along the Drive to Port Soderick. To take part in this activity you must have a road worthy bike and a cycle helmet.

For those without bikes, we will be doing a short hike from the Pigeon Stream Car Park (about half way along Marine Drive) and we will be hiking along the Drive to Port Soderick.

Both groups will be meeting at their respective start points for 19:00 and we should all arrive at Port Soderick for just after 20:00. Hot Dogs and juice will be provided to everyone and we will finish the evening with a wide game. Pick up is at Port Soderick at 21:00.

Beavers Investiture

2nd Onchan Thursday Beavers invested three new Beavers into their Colony on the 2 June 2011. Torin S., Aaron C. and Bradley K. The three boys had worked hard during the week to learn their Beaver Promise. They managed to remember it without any help for their Investiture Ceremony. Well done boys – we are very proud of you all! This also meant we could complete our fourth SILVER challenge – the letter I for investiture.

Road Safety Visit

2nd Onchan Thursday Beavers recently had a visit from Cath, of the Road Safety Unit. The Beavers learnt about the Green Cross Code and the different types of crossings and how to use them properly. Cath, also talked to the Beavers about the importance of securing their seat belts when travelling as a passenger in a car and wearing a safety helmet when out on their bikes. This visit also meant we could complete our third SILVER challenge -the letter S for safety.

Party in the Park

Around one hundred Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from 2nd Onchan took part in our 50th Birthday celebrations at Onchan Park on Sunday 29. May 2011. Onchan Commissioners kindly provided all our members with a ‘Passport’ which allowed everyone to go on the parks attractions free of charge. The Group also bought everyone an ice cream. Luckily the weather was warm and sunny and everyone had a great time.

Our next Birthday event is a Group Social on the 17. July 2011 for invited guests, followed by a Group Camp at the Crossags, Ramsey over the 23. – 25. September 2011.

Cubs at Ardwhallan

On Monday 30th May 2011, instead of a normal Cub Meeting 2nd Onchan’s Manannan Cub Pack met at Ardwhallin Outdoor Pursuits Centre, all Cubs made use of the assault course where we had races between each other, timed relay races and also a water cup challenge where they had to get a cup of water around the assault course without spilling any of the water, we also used the low ropes course as well where the Cubs had to work their way around several obstacles. The afternoon finished with a game of Danish Longball before all Cubs and Leaders setting off home.

Manannan Cubs Ramsey Camp

Over the weekend of 27. – 29. May 2011, twenty one Cubs & five Leaders went to Ramsey for a weekend of fun and adventure. On Friday Night after a short briefing we set off from Ramsey Grammar School and hiked up towards Albert Tower, once we have reached the top, all Cubs went through the Promise & the Law and they all did very well as they remembered it word for word.

We then set off down towards the hairpin and the heavens opened, we all got pretty wet. We played a few Wide Games before the final descent into Ramsey, we made it back at the Scout Hall at approx 9.30pm and decided to show a film on the big screen. It was then time for bed, after a couple of hours all the Cubs were settled, and the Leaders could finally get to sleep too.

It was a very early start the next morning with all the Cubs awake at 6.30am and consequently the Leaders were up a minute later, after breakfast and inspection we walked to Mooragh Park where we all played in the park. The main activity for the day was the Venture Centre which all the Cubs were looking forward too, once at the Venture Centre we split into two groups, where activities included abseiling, archery and air rifle shooting. For lunch it was hot dogs and soup which was engulfed down by the Cubs as they were all starving. After lunch it was time to go on the Assault Course, all the Cubs had a fantastic time and managed to get very wet with the help of Akela and also very muddy too. Luckily enough most of the Leaders managed to stay dry which we were very pleased about. It was then time to leave the Venture Centre and after saying a big thank you to the Instructors, we headed back to the Scout Hall in Ramsey. After dropping all kit and bags off we walked to the Rugby pitch and played football and cricket, soon after this, dinner arrived and we all sat down to have our chippy tea. After dinner it was time for bowling at the Sure strike in Ramsey, all Cubs enjoyed the bowling and some of the Cubs scores were very impressive, we were due to go and play Danish Longball after bowling but unfortunately it was raining so we all headed back to the Scout Hall and watched a couple of films, where all Cubs fell asleep during the second film.

The next morning all Leaders had planned a lie in but oh no, the Cubs were awake again at 6.30am so Leaders didn’t manage to have much of a lie in. It was time for Breakfast and Inspection, shortly after this all the Cubs packed all their gear away and then got themselves ready for Raft Building on the Mooragh Park Lake, the Cubs split into two groups and made great rafts, after completion of the rafts it was time to race them on the lake. The winning team were the Cubs that managed to get their raft all the way around the boats and then back to the side and then de-assemble there rafts. All Cubs managed to stay dry which didn’t go down well, so they were all allowed to jump into the lake afterwards, it was then back to the Scout Hall to get dry and warm again, it was time for lunch and a chat about how they thought the camp went, to the Leaders delight all the Cubs had a fantastic time. After a quick tidy of the Scout Hall all the Cubs then walked to the bus station to catch the bus to Onchan to join the rest of the group in the 50th Birthday Celebrations. On the bus a few of the Cubs slept while Akela and Mark travelled back to Onchan with all the gear from the weekend. Once we arrived in Onchan we joined in with the celebrations and made use of the various attractions at Onchan Park including the motor boats, bumper boats, tennis and golf. The weekend then finished with everyone having an Ice-Cream and going home with their parents with smiles on their faces.

2nd Onchan Thursday Beaver Scouts have already started their Silver Challenge with the letter V. They have recently made a visit to the Harbour Control Office in Douglas. The Beavers spent some time in the office looking at the various cameras around the Island’s harbours, finding out information about tides and wind speeds in the Irish Sea, as well as looking at the radar screen showing the different vessels around the Isle of Man. The Beavers then spent some time with the Isle of Man Coastguard looking at the equipment they use to perform a range of coastal and inshore rescues.

Scouts Gain Canoeist Badge

Five Scouts from 2nd Onchan’s Moddey Dhoo Troop (David H., Sean L., Sam L., Sam M. and Adam E.) gained their Canoeist Activity Badge during a training weekend in Ramsey over the 14. – 15. May 2011. The Scouts spent two days training and stayed overnight in the 1st Ramsey Scout Hall. The weather could have been better as it was mostly overcast with a stiff breeze and the odd shower thrown in too.

Cubs Three Legs Challenge – Part 2

On Sunday 8. May, 2nd Onchan Manannan Cubs & 2nd Onchan Snaefell Cubs took part in the second Three Legs Challenge for Cub Scouts. There was a very good turnout from 2nd Onchan over all. The day started off very wet but during the morning the rain soon cleared and brightened up. All Cubs met at Glen Wyllin where we walked along the Raad ny Foillan towards Peel, at German Halt, we then continued along the Old Train Track to St Johns. We got into St Johns shortly after 2pm. The distance of the walk was 7.49 miles long, all the Cubs did very well and all appeared to enjoy themselves, though a few were quite tired by the end.

Manannan Cubs Cycle Hike & Wide Game

On Monday 2. May 2011, 2nd Onchan’s Manannan Cub Pack made use of the BMX Track at South Barrule Plantation. The Cubs spent a couple of hours in the plantation on the track, the Cubs didn’t find it too difficult and they all had a great time. After this we had juice back at Watertrough Cottage before taking part in a small treasure hunt followed by a few Wide Games in the plantation. The Cubs were also given a task to find the biggest tree in the plantation to win a Easter Egg about after 10 minutes, Alex found the biggest tree and won a Easter Egg.

Cub Scouts at Camelot

On Saturday 30. April 2011, thirty Cubs from 2^nd Onchan along with seven Leaders attended a day trip to Camelot Theme Park. The day started very early for everyone with all the Cubs meeting at 6.15am at the Sea Terminal to catch the boat to Liverpool, the boat left on time but the journey was very rough, with most of the Cubs feeling very unwell. Once we arrived in Liverpool we travelled on Coaches to Camelot Theme Park. Once we arrived at Camelot Theme Park we all split into groups for the day, we all met for lunch while we watched the jousting. Most of the Cubs went on all the rides and the most popular ride seemed to the Log Flume and also the Ghost Train. at 4.30pm it was time to get the coach back to Liverpool where the Manannan was waiting. The journey back was great and not as rough as earlier on in the morning, with most of the Cubs watching a film in the Cinema on the boat. Back at the sea terminal all Cubs were picked up by parents at 9.30pm, all the Cubs and Leaders had a fantastic time, and all the Cubs were a credit to 2^nd Onchan as they were all were well behaved.

Party in the Park

All members of the Group are invited to our Birthday Party in Onchan Park on Sunday 29. May 2011.

The fun starts at 2pm and winds down around 4pm. All members will be given a Passport which will allow them free goes on many of the Parks attractions. All members will also get a free ice cream.

We will all be meeting in our Sections at 2pm outside the café, to be organised by Section Leaders into smaller groups. Beavers and Cubs will go around the park with Leaders while the Scouts and Explorer Scouts will be able to go around the park in groups of at least three members.

Everyone must be wearing their Scarf and a coat should also be brought along in case of inclement weather.

Family members are also welcome to join us, but will have to pay for the attractions. Leaders unfortunately cannot look after brothers or sisters of members and they must remain the responsibility of parents.

Water & Electricity Visits

2nd Onchan’s Thursday Beavers recently had a visit from the Water & Sewerage Authority. Aisha and Matthew - who incidentally use to be a Beaver at 2nd Onchan many years ago - explained the water cycle to the Beavers and how clean, safe water made its way to their taps. They gave each of the Beavers an activity book, pencil and ruler. An informative evening which the Beavers seemed to enjoy.

Last month we had a visit from the Manx Electricity Authority. This again was very interesting and the Beavers were able to see how electrical circuits could be connected and broken using themselves in the process! They also explained about the sub-stations on the Island and showed the Beavers the different types of electrical cables they used, including an example of the cables found in the Irish Sea.

Commitment Award for 2nd Onchan Members

As part of 2nd Onchan’s 50th Birthday Celebrations, the Group is setting up a new Award. It’s basically a Commitment Award and will be presented to Scouts just before they move up from the Scout Section and into the Explorer Scouts and therefore are leaving 2^nd Onchan, but continuing their Scouting.

To gain the Award you must:

Be a member of 2^nd Onchan Scout Group as a Scout.
Have been both a Beaver Scout and a Cub Scout (not necessarily in 2^nd Onchan)
Are intending to move up into the Explorer Scouts.

The Award is a metal Pin Badge and is not an official uniform Badge, but it is hoped that the badge will be worn by our ex members on their Explorer Scout Uniform. It is also intended to be a memento of their time in the Group.

St. Georges Day - Information

Below is the information for the forthcoming 2011 St. George’s Day Parade, to be held in Laxey on Saturday 23. April, 2011.

St. George’s Day is the only occasion when members from all sections: Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Network meet together to reaffirm their promise. This is made by everyone in the Scout Movement, both current and previous (once a Scout, always a Scout). All members should be smartly dressed in full uniform with the Neckers neatly pressed and remember to bring money for the collection.

All Scouts will assemble near Laxey Fire Station, parade along Mines Road, cross the busy road with the assistance of the Police, down Captain’s Hill and through the footpaths onto Laxey Washing Floor, where the service will take place. Parents should not take part in the parade, but are welcome to view the parade along the route and from the many observation areas above the Laxey Washing Floor.

Please do not park anywhere near Laxey Fire Station or along Mines Road since this will not only cause problems in the event of an emergency, but also parked cars will spoil the parade. There are lots of car parks available around Laxey.

There are public toilets available near to the fire station assembly point and at the MER station after the event.

2.00 pm Parents to drop off children along Mines Road, where they will be directed by Parent Marshals in high viz jackets and members will be directed to the assembly area behind the fire station.
2.30 pm Parade commences.
2.45 pm Parade assembles on the Washing Floor
3.00 pm Service starts
3.30 pm Parade dismissed by Island Commissioner and parent pick-up

Kayak Polo Competition Results

The annual Kayak Polo Competition was held at Ballakermeen School Swimming Pool on the 19. March 2011. This competition is open to all Island Scout Troops, Explorer Units and the Scout Network. Each team played four games over the three hour competition. The winners were Team 9, 2nd Onchan ‘D’ (Oliver M., Eliot S. & Chris W.)who also won the event last year. Manannan Cubs Visit to the Life Boat Station

As part of the Local Knowledge Badge, twenty eight Cubs from the Manannan Pack went and visited Douglas Life Boat Station on Monday 14. March 2011. During the visit the Cubs were shown all around the station and got to go on the Boat, where we were shown all around the different parts of the lifeboat. 2nd Onchan Manannan Pack at Eary Cushlin

Over the weekend 11. – 13. March, twenty two Cubs, four Leaders and one dog, from 2nd Onchan’s Manannan Cub Scout Pack, went to Eary Cushlin. On Friday night after a brief talk we went for a nice walk up Cronk Ny Arrey Laa, we actually didn’t make it all the way up as the weather wasn’t too brilliant and most of the Cubs were very tired, we made it about ¾ of the way up the hill.

Back at Eary Cushlin we had a few games of Pictionary and a Quiz. It was then time for Supper and Bed, it was about 3am when all the Cubs were asleep, the next morning was a early start with everyone up by 6.30am, after Breakfast we had room inspection, and the Cubs had free time where they played football and made Dens around Eary Cushlin, we then went into Onchan for a game of Laser Blast. After Laser Blast we had lunch in Onchan Park and then went swimming at the NSC where all the Cubs had fun on the slides and by splashing Akela. We then went back to the Scout Hall for some games and a Chippy Tea. We entered two teams in the Super Splash competition where we did very well. The other Cubs stayed at the Scout Hall and watched a few films and played some games in the Scout Hall. We arrived back at Eary Cushlin at 10pm where we watched another film before everyone headed to their rooms. Sunday morning was a early start for Akela who was up at 7am while the other Leaders were still asleep, after Breakfast and Inspection we did some Bivouac Building in the plantation and a treasure hunt. It was then time for lunch, after lunch we awarded prizes and converted all points into sweets. We finished of the weekend with a few Wide Games. Everyone had a fantastic weekend and all the Cubs had good things to say about the Cub Camp.

Super Splash Success

The Group entered four teams in the Scout Super Splash Competition, which took place at Ramsey Swimming Pool on Saturday 12. March 2011. Two teams were entered by the Manannan Pack in the Cub Scout Section and two from the Phoenix Troop in the Scout Section. Well done to all those who took part especially the Phoenix Troop ‘A’ Team who won the Scout Section.

Cub Scouts Three Legs Challenge

On Sunday 6. March 2011 – 2^nd Onchan Manannan Pack and 2^nd Onchan Snaefell Pack took part in the Three Legs Challenge for Cub Scouts, we had a great turnout with approx 35 Cubs and Leaders taking part. The route started at Glen Maye along the Bayr ny Skeddan into Peel then along the Heritage Trail. All 35 Cubs and Leaders completed the walk and will all receive a certificate for attending and a special badge if they complete all three walks. Well done to all those Cubs who took part in the Challenge.

Cubs Letterbox Hike

2nd Onchan’s Manannan Cubs and Leaders braved the Isle of Man weather on Sunday, it was very cold, misty, foggy and windy. We set of from the Bungalow and walked up Snaefell to find our first letterbox which we found with no problems at all, it was a short hike back down to the road, where we hiked to the old Snaefell mines and stopped off for lunch. After a brief lunch we found some other letter boxes in the area before walking to Laxey village. We finished at Browns Cafe where we finished the hike, well done to all those Cubs, Leaders, Parents and Ruby Dhoo (Akela’s Dog) who took part in the hike.

Group Numbers Grow

2nd Onchan is getting bigger. Each year we carry out a census of members for the Scout Association. In January 2010 our membership stood at 134. This year we have grown to 157 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders. Congratulations to all the Section Leaders for making Scouting so popular in Onchan and for helping to make 2nd Onchan, the largest (and best) Scout Group on the Isle of Man.

2nd Onchan Phoenix Scouts Watertrough Cottage Camp

Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders from 2nd Onchan’s Phoenix Troop held a short overnight camp at the Groups Bunkhouse Watertrough Cottage over the the 29. – 30. January 2011. Watertrough Cottage is located in South Barrule Plantation and we made good use of what the Plantation has to offer. On the Saturday afternoon, the Scouts spent a couple of hours mountain biking round the various trails and after dinner, they were off again this time in the dark (and cold). The Scouts also got to use a Volcano Kettle to boil water. On the Sunday morning they built bivouac shelters before heading off home just before lunch time.

2nd Onchan Cubs Sleepover

On Saturday 29. January 2011, 2nd Onchan’s Manannan Cubs and Snaefell Cubs got together for a joint movie night at the Scout Hall. Forty Cubs met at the Scout Hall on Saturday evening and after a quick briefing it was off to the glen for some Wide Games. Back at the Scout Hall we all settled down to a couple of films on the big screen before settling for the night. The next morning was a very early start (and I mean early) 5.45am most of the cubs were awake which meant the Leaders were shortly up then as well. We had some breakfast and then played in the park and finishing off with a mass game of Danish Long Ball for all the 40 Cubs. Everyone enjoyed it and the Leaders got about 3 hours sleep so in all a good joint movie night.

2nd Onchan Scout Top Fundraiser

On Monday 10. January 2011, the Scouts attending the 2011 World Jamboree and their parents held their first meeting of the new year at the 1st Malew Scout Hall.

Apart from discussing progress and future fundraising events Roger Birtles, the Unit Leader had the pleasure to present prizes to the four scouts who had individually raised the most money for the Jamboree Unit's funds during 2010.

The picture (left to right) shows Josh C., Paul B., Roger, Todd P. & Ryan D. All received a mini Mag Light and the winner Ryan D. of 2nd Onchan, received a Tool Logic Survival Knife.

Between them they managed to raise £405.00 doing things as varied as sponsored cycle rides to window cleaning.

50 Years of 2nd Onchan

During 2011 2nd Onchan Scout Group celebrates its 50th Birthday. There was a 2nd Onchan Scout Group which started in Onchan in 1911, but that disappeared in the dim and distant past. The present Group was formed in 1961. In celebration of our half century we will be running several events during 2011 (further details about these will go out over the coming months). In early January 2011 all members of the Group will be presented with a special badge (see below) which can be worn on uniform during 2011.

Beavers Fire Station Visit

2nd Onchan Manannan Cubs at Ardwhallan

Sixteen Cubs, four Leaders and one Young Leader from 2nd Onchan Manannan Cub Pack spent the weekend at Ardwhallan Outdoor Pursuits Centre over the weekend 19. – 21. November 2010.

On the Friday Night after a quick briefing and splitting the Cubs into groups for the weekend, Gryffindor, Slytherin & Ravenclaw, it was off the nearby plantation for a few Wide Games, then was a quick Navigation Hunt to find the Letterbox near St Luke’s Church. Once back at Ardwhallin we had a supper in a very smoky Viking Longhouse before finishing off some more Wide Games in the field before heading back inside.

On the Saturday morning after breakfast we split up into three groups and went on the Low Ropes Course & worked how to use the Cheese Cranes, we did some Archery, and Climbing and also a Blind Fold Sheep Trail. It was then time for lunch, which went down very well with all the Cubs & Leaders. After lunch we completed time trials on the Assault Course before finishing the day with some orienteering. After dinner, we had a few quiz questions before settling down to watch a couple of movies, then it was time for bed as most of the Cubs were falling asleep.

Sunday morning was another early start for the Leaders & the Cubs, for breakfast was Bacon Butties which went down a treat for everyone, we worked through Challenge Bases in the morning and also did a wet Assault Course before getting changed into dry clothes and getting ready for lunch. After lunch we talked about how the Camp and went and all the Cubs thoughts on how we did and what things they would like to do in the future. It was then a quick tidy up of Ardwhallin before returning home.

A few comments about the Camp from some of the Cubs and Parents were: ‘thank you very much to you and the leaders for giving up your time to give the boys such a great weekend, Toby had a great time. ‘ Thanks to you all for a great Camp Conal really enjoyed it. ‘ Thanks Andrew, Lewis had a great time at the best Cub Camp I’ve ever been to in my whole Cub Camp experience’ ‘ What an amazing time I had & thank all the leaders for making it so good fun’

Thanks to all the Leaders who helped run the camp – now it’s time to have a rest before the next Cub Camp in early 2011.

Remembrance Sunday

Around eighty Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts from Onchan took part in the village Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service on the 14. November 2010, as we remembered those who gave their lives in war. This was one of the best turnouts we have had at such a parade and there were lots of positive comments on how well turned out everyone was.

Manannan Pack Invest New Members

On Monday at the Cub Meeting we invested seven Cubs into Manannan Pack, after everyone was invested we had a Pack photo taken. One of the Cubs is going to Las Vegas on holiday and is going to meet up with another Cub Pack in the States and he will present the American Pack with a few Isle of Man Badges and also our Pack photo.

Phoenix Troop at Ardwhallan

Sixteen Scouts, three Leaders and two Young Leaders from 2nd Onchan’s Phoenix Scout Troop spent the weekend at Ardwhallan Outdoor Pursuits Centre over the 5. – 7. November 2010.

On the Friday night after a quick briefing and sorting out of rooms, it was off to the nearby plantation for a Wide Game, most of the Scouts covered their faces in genuine army camouflage for the activity. Once back at Ardwhallan we released Chinese Lanterns into the clear night sky, our way of celebrating Guy Fawkes Night without scaring all the nearby farm animals. We then had supper around the fire in the Viking Longhouse, which resulted in us all smelling of wood smoke.

On Saturday morning after breakfast and room inspection we were out taking part in the various activities and challenges that are available in the Ardwhallan Grounds. These included the Assault Course, Low Rope Course and lots of problem solving challenges. After lunch we did a six mile hike which took us over some of the wettest footpaths on the hills up to Brandywell. In the evening we popped into Douglas to watch the Fireworks before heading back to Ardwhallan for some night time orienteering followed by a movie before heading off to bed.

Sunday mornings activities were Archery and the Cheese Crane. Most Scouts then went off to Peel for Swimming and the few that stayed behind did Backwoods Cooking. After lunch we managed another session on the Assault Course before giving the centre a good clean out before the Scouts headed off home at 3pm.

2nd Onchan Fireworks Night

Over one hundred members of 2nd Onchan Scout Group took part in a Fireworks Night on the 3. November 2010. Sixty Beavers and Cubs met at the Scout Hall for an hour of games and activities, while forty Scouts hiked along the coast from Onchan Head and up Groudle Glen to the Scout Hall. At the Hall everyone had hot dogs, soup and juice before heading outside to watch the Galaxy Fireworks Display, which was pretty impressive and lasted around three minutes. The weather wasn’t brilliant but luckily the strong winds had dropped and the drizzle had just about died away. A great night which we hope to repeat next year.

Remembrance Sunday

On Sunday the 14. November 2010, it’s Remembrance Sunday, the day we remember all those who gave their lives defending their Country and the way of life we enjoy.

Our two Cub Packs together with the two Scout Troops and the Explorer Unit will be joining with the people of Onchan to Parade from the Manx Arms Hotel to St. Peters Church, where a Service of Remembrance will be held. Afterwards we will be parading to the War Memorial on Main Road, where a short Open Air Service will be held.

We will be meeting at the Manx Arms Car park for 09:20. Full uniform, including Scout Activity Trousers and shoes, is to be worn. Please bring a coat with you in case of inclement weather. The Open Air Service at the War Memorial will finish at about 11:10 from where you can be collected.

All Members are expected to attend.

Cubs Kayak Training

Over the last 4 weeks, Cubs from 2nd Onchan’s Manannan Cub Scout Pack have taken part in some basic kayak training at the swimming pool at Ballakermeen High School. The Cubs have learnt how to forward paddle, and how to capsize properly, they have also learn how to play Kayak Tip & Kayak Polo. Towards the end of the kayaking session, we had some swimming races. All the Cubs enjoyed this and we will definitely run some more sessions next year.

Group Fireworks Night

On Wednesday 3. November 2010, we are holding a Group Fireworks Night at the Scout Hall for all Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers.

Beaver Scouts & Cub Scouts: Please meet at the Scout Hall for 19:00. A number of Guy Fawkes themed games will be held for everyone to take part in Uniform to be worn.

Scouts and Explorer Scouts: Please meet at the entrance to Sea Cliff Road, off King Edward Road (where White City used to be and above the path down to Happy Valley Beach) for 19:00. We will then be hiking along to coast to Groudle Beach and up Groudle Glen to the Scout Hall. Please wear suitable hiking gear and bring a working torch. Top half of uniform to be worn.

At about 20:00 everyone will be fed hot dogs and soup before watching a small Fireworks Display outside. Finish time will be about 20:30.

Members must not bring their own fireworks to this event. There is no charge.

The event will proceed if wet.

Onchan District Explorer Scouts – Apex Extreme
